How unscrambling works

Unscrambling is simple in concept: take a set of letters and find every dictionary word that can be spelled with them. Doing it by hand means mentally trying hundreds of combinations — our tool checks all 4,748 words in the dictionary against your rack in a fraction of a second, using letter counts to make sure no letter is used more times than you hold it.

Blank tiles, explained

A blank tile can stand for any letter, which makes it the most flexible tile in Scrabble and Words With Friends. There is a trade-off: in Scrabble a blank scores zero points no matter which letter it represents. That is why experienced players often save blanks for a bingo — playing all seven tiles at once for a 50-point bonus — rather than spending one on a short, low-value word.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do blank tiles work in the unscrambler?

Set the blank-tile count to 1 or 2 and the tool will treat those as wildcards that can represent any missing letter. In real Scrabble blanks score zero points, so the Scrabble Word Finder scores them accordingly.

What is the longest word the unscrambler can find?

It handles racks of up to 12 letters plus 2 blanks, so it can surface words up to 12 letters long from our dictionary.

What is the difference between the unscrambler and the anagram solver?

The unscrambler supports blank wildcard tiles and is built around game racks; the anagram solver takes exact letters only. For scored Scrabble results, use the Scrabble Word Finder.

Does the unscrambler work for Words With Friends?

Yes — the matching works for any tile rack. For WWF-specific letter scores, use the Words With Friends cheat page.

Is the word unscrambler free?

Yes — free, unlimited and no signup required.
